About the event

Have you ever wondered what to do when your intake is an adult male who’s only in therapy because someone told him that he needs it or because he received an ultimatum? What if he’s never been to therapy, has had a poor experience, or views it as a weakness?

This presentation explores evidence-based strategies for building rapport and establishing a strong therapeutic alliance with this population. The approaches discussed are grounded in peer-reviewed research, informed by clinical practice, and draw on Dr. Aliga’s dissertation work inspired by the American Psychological Association’s 2018 Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Boys and Men.

Learning Objectives:

  • Summarize the research on adult (18+) male clients in therapy

  • Practice three evidence-based therapeutic approaches with men

  • Describe ways to engage men experiencing treatment resistance
